New Mexico State at FIU - 10/7/26

FIU has been one of the strangest teams in the country to watch this year. The defense is suffocating and the offense moves the ball at will, then stalls out the moment it smells the end zone. Tonight I'm betting on the Panthers to win at home, and on the offense to finally cash in.

The defense is the real deal. Against FBS opponents, FIU has allowed 4.05 yards per play. USF, Buffalo and Florida Atlantic combined for 770 yards on 190 snaps. New Mexico State's offense is fine, averaging 5.6 yards per play against FBS teams, but this is the best unit it will have seen since Florida State.

The offense is due. FIU has gained 426 yards per game against FBS teams and scored 17.3 points per game. Teams that move the ball like that don't stay that inefficient for long. Eight turnovers in four games have done a lot of the damage, and turnover luck tends to even out. New Mexico State is the right defense to break out against: it has allowed 5.9 yards per play and almost 30 points a game to FBS opponents.

Why FIU -2.5. My numbers have FIU winning by about eight. FIU controls the clock, holding the ball for more than 32 minutes a game, and New Mexico State is 0-2 on the road. I'm buying the spread down to -2.5 for a little cushion, so FIU just has to win by a field goal.

Why the Over, and why it's the riskier leg. FIU's FBS games have finished with 28, 53 and 26 points, so this isn't a lock. But the 53 was the one game where FIU's offense finished drives, and New Mexico State's games against FBS teams have averaged 51.5 total points. If FIU turns its yardage into points tonight, 47 comes quickly.

How I'm playing it. FIU -2.5 straight is my best bet of the two. The Over is a smaller play. If you want both for one ticket, the parlay pays +172: 0.5 units to win 0.86.
